Porter announces candidacy for Supervisor special election

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ROYCEANN PORTER TO RUN FOR JOHNSON COUNTY SUPERVISOR

Longtime community leader Royceann Porter has announced she is a candidate for the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. Porter, a recognized community leader devoted to improving the lives of her neighbors, has been an advocate in Johnson County for decades on a wide array of issues including mental health services, affordable housing, veterans’ services, workers’ rights, restorative justice, and opportunities for youth. She also has experience in working with city and county leaders to craft policy solutions.

“Much of the work of the Board of Supervisors overlaps with the community work I’ve been doing for almost three decades, and I’d like to help the current board continue to move Johnson County in the right direction,” Porter said in a statement.

Porter holds a degree in Social Work from Kirkwood Community College, has served on the Iowa City Community Police Review Board, and currently works as a project organizer for the Teamsters.

If elected, Porter would be the first person of color elected to a county-wide office in Johnson County history.

The county is holding a special election on December 18 to fill an open seat in the wake of the recent death of Supervisor Kurt Friese.
